The other day as I walked over to the waterfront in the Columbia District I noticed the 3 big new cruise ships laying proudly parked. I thought it was great seeing so many of them at the same time so I really wanted to know more. After reading the Port of San Diego’s website I ran across the article Port of San Diego Welcomes Three Ships Signaling Start of Cruise Season and realized that the new cruise season has began in Downtown San Diego.
With more then 6,300 passengers the Sapphire Princess, the Westerdam and the Statendam arrived the other day bringing a huge crowd together for a ceremony and media event where they were welcomed to the city.
The cruise ship business has a huge impact on the regions economy where each homeported ship (starts and ends their travel in San Diego) that docks either at the port’s B Street Cruise Ship Terminal or the Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier has an economic impact of $2 million for the region. Each visiting ship has a $1 million impact.
The Port of San Diego said that they are expecting about 104 ships this year…when you do the math…thats a great number for Downtown San Diego and sourrounding neighborhoods.
