An update of the project of expanding the San Diego Convention Center in the Marina District in Downtown San Diego and hotel development was received Tuesday September 07, 2010. The Board of Port Commissioners told staff to begin the environmental process which includes beginning the selection process this month for a consultant to conduct an environmental impact report. This could take some time between 12 to 18 months to complete.
The project for the Convention Center include;
- 200,000 to 250,000 square feet of exhibit space
- 100,000 square feet of meeting rooms
- 80,000 square feet of multi-purpose ballrooms
The project for the hotel development include;
- 250 -500 guest rooms
- Ballroom/meeting space
- Retail space
- Parking
This project is expected to generate $698 million of economic activity annually in addition to the $1,3 billion a year that the Convention Center already generates.
