Finally after years of planning, debate and lawsuits…the initial phase of the North Embarcadero Visionary Plan Phase 1 was approved by the California Coastal Commission April 13th, 2011.
The $29.6 million project, part of the larger plan, will dramatically transform the San Diego Bay West of Pacific Highway and between B street and Navy piers along North Harbor Drive. North Harbor Drive will be realigned to allow for a 105 foot wide esplanade, three times its current size, that will be embellished with groves of jacaranda trees and food pavilions. There will also be a 1.7 acre public park that will be incorporated into the planned Lane Field hotel development, now a parking lot at Broadway and Harbor Drive in the Columbia District right in front of Bayside & Breeza.
The Commission is also requiring that the Port of San Diego add 1.25 acres of parkland along the waterfront to make up for the elimination of the once proposed 2.5 acre oval park at the foot of Broadway.
