Purchasing real estate in Core San Diego means being able to enjoy fun events on a year-round basis, particularly in the summertime. In 2017, summer fun will start on the third weekend of June with the Taste of Gaslamp tour, featuring more than 20 downtown restaurants. This culinary experience kicks off the next three months, which are packed with special events that should not be missed. Here are some of the highlights of summer in downtown San Diego.
1. Little Italy Mercato
Starting on June 24th and continuing every Saturday all through the summer, the open space between Front Street and Kettner Boulevard of Little Italy is transformed into Mercato, a bazaar-like event that resembles a traditional Italian farmers’ market. This is your opportunity to stock up on fresh California fruits and vegetables as well as gourmet treats such as homemade jams, bakery products, handcrafts, artisan snacks, and organic foods. Local bistros, restaurants, and breweries often set up tasting tables and hand out coupons. If you lived in one of the many great lofts in Little Italy San Diego, you could enjoy this event every weekend.
2. Mass Creativity for Children
Don’t let your kids miss this special event at the New Children’s Museum on June 24th, which will mark the fifth anniversary of this all-day artistic expo. Mass Creativity is a series of museum tours, workshops, and activities that allow children to explore their artistic talents. Musical acts and theater troupes will perform on the garden and courtyard areas. The event starts at 10am on the museum’s garden entrance on West Island Avenue. This is a free event, but space is limited and parents must RSVP in advance.
3. Fourth of July at the USS Midway
One of the most patriotic American museums is located right on the San Diego waterfront, and this is where you can enjoy the best fireworks display in Southern California, right from the flight deck of the aircraft carrier. Aside from having the best spot to watch the fireworks, you can also enjoy the live entertainment organized by the USO. Tickets go on sale in June.
4. LGBT Pride Music Festival
The rainbow flag will fly over San Diego on July 15th and 16th as locals gather at Marston Point in Balboa Park to celebrate diversity. This year, there will be nine entertainment zones. Some will be musical stages, while others will be set up as beverage gardens, a youth zone, art gallery exhibits, and a relaxation tent for senior citizens.
5. Comic-Con International
Tickets to the main activities at the San Diego Convention Center are already sold out for this major pop culture expo. However, you should keep an eye on the side events going on at places such as the San Diego Central Library and the Hard Rock Café as there may be special appearances by artists, scholars, and collectors. The convention runs from July 20th to the 23rd.
