Whether you’re a lifelong San Diegan looking for new outdoorsy adventures or recently purchased a condo in Downtown San Diego, we’ve got a few suggestions. With warmer morning and sunnier days, getting out to hike around town has never been easier.
Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve
Torrey Pines offers numerous hiking trails, most of which are easy and accessible to nearly anyone looking for a short hike with gorgeous views of the ocean. Depending on what time of the year you go, you may be lucky enough to spot dolphins frolicking in the ocean or a Gray Whale surfacing. The two most popular trails, Razor Point trail and Guy Fleming Trail, are 1.3 miles and just under a mile long, respectively.
Los Penasquitos Canyon Trail
Just off of the 15 Freeway and Mira Mesa Boulevard, this hiking trail is one that the whole family can do together. The trail is easy enough for all ages and everyone can enjoy the natural beauty of the streams, waterfalls, creeks, and local wildlife that they may encounter during the hike.
Iron Mountain Trail
Found in Poway, this trail is 5.8 miles long and ranges from moderate to difficult in certain spots. This trail slowly creeps upward and rewards hikers with amazing views all around them. For hikers that want to increase the difficulty level, there are additional trails leading to the peak. It is recommended to pack plenty of water and sunscreen when tackling the Iron Mountain Trail as it can warm up quickly on this trail.
Cowles Mountain
One of the most popular hikes in San Diego, this hike is about 3 miles round trip. The difficultly level for this hiking experience is moderate and trail is steep in some areas. However, the top is attainable and the views are worth the climb. Hikers who want to avoid the crowds can give the backside a try as well.
Mount Woodson
The hike to Mount Woodson is a strenuous one and starts at the bottom of Lake Poway. The trail is a little over 6 miles and most people end it at the infamous “Potato Chip Rock”, a piece of granite that hangs over San Diego. You can, however, continue past to the actual top of the mountain a short ways up. The climb is a steep one and recommended for more advanced hikers.
