Do you crave more than a meal when you dine out? San Diego’s pop-up dinners may be the answer. These one-time food events offer unique dining experiences. They might bring you to an unexpected location, give you a chance to chat with your chef, or focus on a special theme. Here are a few favorites, suggested by the friendly Downtown San Diego real estate agents at 92101 Urban Living.
Cow by Bear
One of the most unusual is Cow by Bear. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, a chef dressed as a bear creates a culinary masterpiece that centers on a 50-day dry-aged rib eye. Ten lucky diners meet at 8pm at a secret location in or near downtown San Diego and the mysterious Bear cooks a five-course meal for them. Diners don’t know where the event will be until the day before. Reservations can only be made on the website and fill up months in advance.
Toronado
Pop-ups aren’t exclusively for dinner. Once a month, Toronado hosts a “beer brunch” in North Park. The special Sunday brunch hour pairs locally crafted brews with the food creations of local chefs for a one of a kind experience. Each event is unique with a menu inspired by the beers that will be served.
Re:Source
Re:Source is the pop-up dinner with a conscience. Consumers won’t buy ugly or odd looking fruits and vegetables, wasting a whopping 40 percent of produce. At Re:Source’s series of “Unwasted Food” pop-up dinners, local chefs take that perfectly edible food and create a four-course meal. Besides using food that would have been tossed, 20 percent of the proceeds go directly to the San Diego Food System Alliance.
Le Diner en Blanc
America’s Finest City is part of the international pop-up dinner movement, Le Diner enBlanc. Once a year (usually in October), people dressed all in white bring tables, chairs, and a picnic supper and dine together in public. The elegant, yet whimsical tradition began in Paris in 1988. Dinner is by invitation only, although if you don’t have a connection, you can register online for the wait list. The location is kept secret until the very last minute. Last year, it was at Embarcadero Marina Park North.
