In many cities, the downtown area is nothing but a vast urban space without a tree in sight. In Downtown San Diego, however, you’ll find no shortage of fun outdoor activities, including plenty of green space for a picnic or relaxing in the sun. Here are a handful of ways to enjoy the outdoors in Downtown, recommended by local Downtown San Diego real estate experts.
1. Take in a Game at Petco Park
Baseball season kicks off next month, and what better way to enjoy a sunny day than taking in a Padres game at the park? With only 81 home games a year, Petco Park is also used to host concerts and events such as the upcoming Padres Beerfest and a Billy Joel concert in May.
2. Enjoy a Picnic at Waterfront Park
Downtown’s 12-acre Waterfront Park is the perfect place to beat the heat in the summer with an 830-foot fountain that shoots water 14 feet into the air. The park also has lush gardens to explore, a playground for kids, and plenty of grassy areas for picnicking with a view of the bay.
3. Grab a Drink at Seaport Village
Seaport Village is a large waterfront dining and shopping complex and a one-stop destination for entertainment. While Seaport can get a little touristy, from time to time it’s nice to take in unobstructed views of the bay while enjoying a drink and a bite to eat at Edgewater Grill, or at an outdoor table at San Diego Pier Cafe.
4. Attend an Event at the Quartyard
The Quartyard is a massive new public space in downtown’s East Village that has something for everyone. Along with a 5,000-square-foot dog park, the Quartyard boasts dozens of food trucks, a craft beer garden, and dozens of public events throughout the year. From outdoor movie nights and concerts to special events and big-name DJs, there’s always something to do at the Quartyard, which may or may not be a selling point for lofts in the East Village.
