Moving is a major life event, which can be stressful and time-consuming for anyone. It can be just as difficult, if not more so, for your furry friend. There are a number of steps that can be taken, both before you move and after you settle in, to ensure your pet’s transition is as smooth and comfortable as possible.
Before the Move
Prepare Your Pet for the Trip
If you’re moving from La Mesa to a loft or penthouse in Downtown San Diego, no biggie. However, if you’re pet is going to be in the car for a substantial amount of time, keep in mind many pets can easily be uncomfortable on long car trips. In the weeks leading up to the move, take your dog or cat on car trips, which will allow him or her to grow accustomed to car travel.
Stay Clam and Reassure Your Pet
Though it may be challenging, try to remain as calm as possible while you are going through the process of packing boxes and rearranging furniture. A pet can sense when an owner is upset and nervous and often will follow suit. Stay upbeat, give your pet as much attention as possible, and offer positive words of encouragement as you put the finishing touches on the exit process.
Introduce Your Pet to the New Space Before Moving In
If possible, bring your dog or cat to the new residence and allow him or her to get acclimated with the new surroundings. Visit as frequently as time will allow prior to actually moving in.
After the Move
Keep Your Pet in a Specific Room When Moving In or Unpacking
The moving-in process, such as when furniture is dragged around or when boxes are unloaded, will be the most unsettling time for your pet. You can limit his or her anxiety by making a comfortable space for your pet in a quiet, empty room. Leave the food and water bowls, a few favorite toys, and a box or bed he or she likes to lie in to help your pet remain distracted while all the action is taking place.
Consider Pet Daycare or a Dog Sitter
Separation anxiety might be a big problem for your pet after you move into your new Little Italy or Gaslamp Quarter condo, especially during the first few weeks. This could lead your pet to commit accidents and/or other destructive behavior. When you leave for work, or know you will be away for an extended period of time, it may be wise to leave your dog or cat at a local pet daycare center or with a pet sitter.
