San Diego’s Little Italy is home to some of the best Italian food in the city, and whether you go to a fine dining restaurant or the deli down the street, you’ll find pizza on the menu. If you just purchased your first condo in Little Italy San Diego and aren’t sure where to get the best slice, try the pie at these 3 spots.
1. Napizza
Napizza embodies the spirit of California with its focus on healthy, all-natural ingredients. This pizzeria is green certified, uses local farms and suppliers, doesn’t use chemicals or preservatives, and even has an in-house nutritionist.
The menu boasts tons of delicious options, but some of our favorites include the Bapo with potato, crispy bacon, fresh rosemary, and fresh mozzarella, and the Spice Me Up, topped with organic sausage, potato, fresh mozzarella, fresh parsley, mushrooms, and jalapeno. Napizza also offers plenty of vegetarian options and gluten free crust.
2. Isola Pizza Bar
Isola pizza bar is named after the grandmother of owner and founder Massimo Tenino. Nothing exemplifies the spirit of Italian cuisine quite like his hand-tossed pizza. The pizza is baked in a wood-burning oven shipped over from Napoli, the mozzarella is handmade in California, and Isola uses only D.O.P. San Marzano tomatoes.
Try the Boscaiola with fennel sausage, artichokes, mozzarella, fontina, mushrooms, and pine nuts, or build your own with toppings like rosemary ham, fresh basil, truffle oil, arugula, pancetta, panna, shiitake mushrooms, and farm egg.
3. Filippi’s Pizza Grotto
Filippi’s is a family-owned pizzeria that’s been in business since 1950. This place still gives off that old-time pizzeria vibe—patrons enter through a little market, sit at tables with red gingham tablecloths, and empty Chianti bottles hang from the ceiling.
Each pizza is made with the secret sauce and toppings remain tried and true, including sausage, mushroom, anchovies, olives, meatballs, and bell peppers.
You can, of course, try other pizza places, but you’ll be hard-pressed to find a place that beats any of these three. Besides, one of the best parts of living in Downtown San Diego is being just steps from delicious food!
