If you’re into running, jogging, hiking, or even strolling, moving into a downtown San Diego condo or loft is highly recommended. Fitness is a major aspect of the San Diego lifestyle. The year-round mild climate and the abundance of easily accessible trails and routes are perfect for running. This is a city where you can run along the waterfront, across historic districts, or through challenging cross-country courses in Balboa Park. The following spots and courses are ideal for runners of all skill levels, and they’re all located near the downtown districts.
The Embarcadero Marina Parks
The distance from the Embarcadero Marina Park South to its northern counterpart is about two miles if you go around the San Diego Convention Center, but you can make it even more challenging if you climb up the Grand Stairway on the southern part of the center and continue on Harbor Drive all the way past the Manchester Grand Hyatt and head south on Kettner Boulevard. An easier, shorter, and more scenic run can be enjoyed by skipping the Grand Stairway and staying on the South Embarcadero boardwalk along the waterfront.
Broadway Pier to the Embarcadero
This round-trip course starts just north of the USS Midway, and it will take you along the waterfront all the way south to Embarcadero Park North, where you can loop around and run toward the convention center, go all the way around, enter the larger loop of Embarcadero Park South, and get back on the boardwalk to return north to the Broadway Pier. If you choose the inverse route, which starts at Embarcadero Park South, you can run up the 100 steps of the Grand Stairway for a greater challenge.
Seaport Village to Harbor Island
The round-trip distance for this course is about 8.5 miles, but you can make it shorter if you turn at the end of Waterfront Park, located between Little Italy and Harborview. In essence, you start at Seaport Village and run north on the Embarcadero boardwalk and past the Maritime Museum. If you decide to make the full run, stay on North Harbor Drive past the Coast Guard Station, head south on Harbor Island Drive, and follow the loop around the island waterfront before turning back.
The Downtown San Diego Loop
You can start this run at the AquaVie Fitness & Wellness Club near Broadway and Second Avenue, head west on Broadway until you reach Harbor Drive, and continue south past Ruocco Park. To enjoy most of the waterfront, enter at Embarcadero Park North and stay on the boardwalk when you exit so you can run past the convention center and Bayfront Park. You’ll want to head east on Gull Street until you encounter Imperial Avenue behind Petco Park. Once you reach 16th Street, you’ll continue north to Broadway, head west, and finish your loop back at Second Avenue. The total distance is about 4.6 miles, but you’re welcome to take shortcuts. As you can see, San Diego has no shortage of fantastic routes for people who love to run, which is only one of the many reasons to consider investing in downtown San Diego real estate.
